Somaliland’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Co-operation Dr. Saad Ali Shire addressed a cross party group of MPs in his briefing to the All-party Parliamentary Group on Somaliland on Thursday. The meeting was also attended community leaders, representatives from the business sector along with many of Somaliland’s friends in the UK.
The Minister’s speech touched on many of Somaliland’s milestones as well as providing a detailed insight into Somaliland’s recent successful Presidential elections. His excellency, elaborated on the government’s agenda on furthering the democratic process in Somaliland, beginning with the planned Parliamentary elections in 2019. The briefing also highlighted some of the challenges ahead for the country, of which the increasing frequency of droughts is a main concern, alongside the staggering numbers of youth unemployment, emphasizing that those issues and others including recognition can only be addressed with the continued co-operation and support of international partners of which the UK is at the forefront.
Dr. Saad spoke about the government’s strategy to attract foreign direct investment, the progress of the Berbera Port expansion under the DP World deal and the advancement of oil exploration in the country as part of the country’s long term economic plan.
